I've wondered if Kirby could transfer the effects he is experiencing to creatures he inhales. Today, he has our answer, and it is in the affirmative. It would be interesting to get a response from Nintendo about the possibilities an intoxicated Kirby would bring. It's also interesting that Kirby's named after an attorney who kind of sort of saved Nintendo's bacon, which I learned about in the docuseries High Score. Now it's time for a shameless segue into what I'm fixating on this week.
The ten-year-old version of me living in the back of my brain is having a fucking conniption with this shit. Within the last week, Boltgun and Starship Troopers Extermination have come out. As I do with many multiplayer titles, I sent out several copies of Troopers and immediately did a live stream. You join fifteen other people to take resources and territory, establish defenses, and then get everyone still standing back to the dropships to escape. If you've seen the movie, it feels true to those insanely over-the-top battle scenes depicted therein. It is immensely satisfying to push back a charging bug with a sustained belt from your Morita, and easy to get overwhelmed when they emerge from the ground to surround you.
Boltgun is a Boomer Shooter that feels like Doom if you were a roided-out, enraged Hulkbuster. When jumping or sprinting, the planet shakes under the weight of your mechanical feet, your momentum knocks enemies back, and bullets have a chance to bounce off your power armor. Enough rounds make it through that it's not wise to stand still, especially if you crank up the difficulty on Exterminatus. Indolence is death, after all.
These games have thoroughly invaded my brain, so comics about them will be coming soon. Today, I'm working on one for Starship Troopers and will be making progress on it during today’s Let's Draw. For the Boltgun, I'll likely draw a short series of them as I did with Smash Bros. Two have already been written, but the third is still materializing in the back of my mind. It takes time to pull inspiration from the warp, and it is difficult to discern what is usable information for comics from the dark influences of the Chaos Gods.
